Dental sealant

Scellant dentaire
Maintain a complete and consistent oral hygiene routine, including flossing, limiting consumption of sugary products and visiting the dentist regularly. These are all ways of preventing tooth decay. However, this is not always enough, especially for young patients whose teeth are still forming and are more fragile. That's why we offer a solution to increase protection against cavities: dental sealants.

When is dental sealant used?

Dental sealant is a type of polymer applied to vulnerable teeth to help protect them from decay. It is used on the flat teeth used to chew food: premolars and molars. These teeth are criss-crossed by crevices and grooves where food residues tend to lodge. This favors the proliferation of bacteria, which take advantage of the opportunity to feed on the sugar they contain. These teeth are also more vulnerable when they first appear. Young permanent teeth are more fragile, as their enamel is not yet fully hardened. Acids produced by microbes can then more easily pierce it, causing decay.

Extra protection

At the Centre dentaire Taschereau in Brossard, we often suggest sealants to our young patients to reduce the risk of cavities. The polymer fills cracks, preventing bacteria from concentrating there. This treatment is purely preventive: it cannot be used if carious lesions are already present.

A simple procedure in just a few steps

Sealing vulnerable teeth is a simple, quick and painless procedure. It requires little preparation and no local anesthetic. The procedure involves just a few steps:
1

A basic assessment

before proceeding with the actual application, the dentist must first confirm that it is really relevant. To do this, he observes the characteristics of the surfaces to be treated;

2

Cleaning vulnerable teeth

the aim is to completely remove food deposits and bacteria, so that they don't get trapped under the sealant. A gel that facilitates polymer adhesion is then applied to the cleaned surfaces

3

Rinsing and drying the teeth

without this, the sealant will stick less well to the teeth;

4

Sealer application

the polymer is applied to selected tooth surfaces before being cured using a photoluminescent beam.

Dental sealants: at the heart of a preventive approach

Although it helps reduce the risk of tooth decay, this procedure is not a substitute for other preventive measures. It is therefore essential to ensure that your child adopts good eating and oral hygiene practices. In addition, during routine visits, we can check the condition of your child's teeth and discuss healthy habits to be developed. If necessary, we'll suggest additional treatments, such as dental sealants!
