Periodontics

Parodontie
Periodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with the supporting structures of the teeth, in particular the gums. These are prone to infections that can lead to serious consequences, such as tooth loss.

What is periodontics?

Unsurprisingly, periodontics is concerned with the periodontium. This term refers to the tissues that hold teeth firmly in place on the jaws. There are four such tissues, each playing a complementary role:

The gum : this pink, visible tissue covers the roots of the teeth, holding them in place and protecting them from external attack. Because of its position, the gum is itself vulnerable to acidity and bacterial attack;

Cementum : the layer covering the roots of teeth. The cementum's rough texture enables the ligament to adhere firmly to it;

Periodontal ligament : this tissue forms the link between the roots of the teeth and the alveolar bone. It holds the teeth firmly in place. Damage caused by infection or trauma weakens this hold;

Alveolar bone : this is the bone in which the teeth are implanted. Each tooth is located in an alveolus, i.e. an individual, defined hole. Although it's not directly exposed, in the case of periodontics, bacteria can attack it and cause serious damage.

The periodontium : a set of vulnerable structures

Not only are the structures of the periodontium important and useful, they are also vulnerable to bacterial attack. This is particularly true of the gums, which are directly exposed to the effects of the products they consume (food, alcohol, tobacco) and the action of bacteria. They are therefore at risk of developing an infection which, in turn, could deepen and attack other periodontal tissues, even the alveolar bone. In some cases, this disease, known as periodontitis, can lead to tooth loss, as well as endangering general health.

That's why periodontics and gum treatments exist: to prevent, control and treat these diseases and their consequences. To achieve this, it is sometimes necessary to resort to minor or more complex surgical manipulations.
